In order to document the various containers of nitro-cellulose film, it is first necessary to know the material’s composition which gives it certain physical and chemical properties that determine what the optimal conditions and practices are for manufacturing, making motion pictures, screening movies, and most importantly preservation. Nitrate-based film was invented after years of experimentation to synthesize a material that was more pliable than glass plates. In a way, the procedure for making moving pictures had already been figured out, but the procedure had to adapt to the continual advancements of materials and methods that were refining it.
