BROWN-LIPE GEAR COMPANY

While the Gear Factory, as it is known today, may not be as recognized as the work Kahn did with the Ford Motor Company, it still exsists as a strong example of one of Kahn's first factories using the reinforced concrete methods he and his brother Julius devised. It is a significant historical artifact within the fabric of the Syracuse community. Although it has a lot in common with the Ford factories, there are also very notable differences in the way it functioned, and while there is also not as much scholarly evidence or documentation on the Brown-Lipe Company, certain conclusions can be made that position the architecture within the framework of the Economy/Equity/Ecology model. Therefore, several comparisons are made between the findings from the Ford Motor Company plants and the tangible remnants of the surviving structure at 200 South Geddes Street.
